It’s been… [checks notes] over ten years since Grand Theft Auto V launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and now we have a trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI!

If we’re honest, GTA5 ran like crap, but it looked amazing, pushing that generation of consoles to their absolute limit. Since then, we’ve had GTA:Online, and a complete rework of the game for PC, then current Microsoft/Sony consoles. It’s been a long ride, and the game continues to be popular, but news has been trickling out about the next title in the series: Grand Theft Auto VI.

And yesterday, the highly anticipated trailer for GTA6 dropped early, thanks to an apparent leak. Rockstar Games quickly took to Twitter (I refuse to call it ‘X’) with the upload.

Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube:

Here’s the first trailer to see a taste of what to expect, direct from the Rockstar Games YouTube channel.

What can we expect?

This is GTA. Not just a game franchise. A phenomenon. I remember I worked in a video game shop over the Christmas period of 2002, when Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas launched. It was insane.

From the trailer, we can see the signature art style of the GTA series, along with their brand of biting satire (emphasis on ‘brand’), and… Vice City, the titular location of the follow up to Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The city was loosely based on several areas near the Florida Keys, with landmarks from the likes of Miami. It looks like GTA6 expands on this, with scenes in the Everglades, airboats, plenty of beaches, car meets, and crime… lots of crime.

I’d expect the game will go all in on the Florida Man meme, with some absolutely wild happenings, plenty of gators, Miami bass music, other pop culture references. I’m personally most looking forward to the radio stations. Ever since GTA3, these have been a snapshot of the culture of the moment, from Vice City’s 80s tunes, to GTA5’s sets from well known DJs. And I still listen to MSX FM and Rise FM stations more than I probably should.

Finally, we can expect the initial release to be console-only – specifically, Xbox and PlayStation – with PC likely 18 months to two years later. This has been Rockstar’s MO for the last few games: why sell a game once when you can sell it twice?

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release in 2025 on current gen Xbox and PlayStation.
