You’ve hit the end of the work week, well done! Now there’s two days to play anything you want. What do you play?

How about a total conversion featuring a beloved franchise?

Whenever there’s a large IP, there’s always hunger in the video game community to be able to experience the various aspects of the story interactively. Unfortunately, the official offerings tend to be a bit hit and miss, with a lot of the experience missing the mark.

One IP specifically that people love is Star Wars. I am one of those people. Spaceships. Laser swords. Giant lumbering death vehicles. Droids vs gleaming white combat armour. What’s not to love? And like a lot of people, the EA Battlefront games left a bitter taste, and were seemingly abandoned when there was so much potential for further ongoing content, not to mention the predatory monetisation complaints.

Leave it to the fans to fill that gap with a mod for an existing game, tactical/strategic first person shooter Squad.

Laser Space Wars

Galactic Contention is a mod for Squad based in a Galaxy Far Far Away, which features the conflict from the prequel trilogy: the Clone War.

The game (because that’s what it basically is) features two main factions: the Grand Army Of The Republic (aka the clone army) and the Confederacy Of Independent Systems military (aka the droid army), along with two esoteric factions in the Tusken Raiders and Gungan Army. Each faction has their own weapons, vehicles, and soldiers, with combat across 25 official maps, with multiple phases of fighting.

Oodles of atmosphere

With Squad already pushing the feel of massive combined arms combat over large scale environments, Galactic Contention takes that even further, with fighting taking place across exotic landscapes, and seamlessly into close quarters ship boarding. Everything from the graphics to the sound is crafted to be accurate to what we saw in the Star Wars prequels and The Clone Wars animated TV series. If you’ve have any interest in those, then you’ll feel right at home on this battlefield.

For the Republic!

Every clone trooper ever.
