Indie games: A cynic’s view.

Over on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, they ran the news of a gorgeous ‘indie game’ from ex-Blizzard developers with $20 million in funding. Although Gigantic is beautiful, it’s hard to argue that having a backer with such deep pockets means going through the same problems as the grass-roots indie developers are. Which is why commenter ‘Sam’ posted such a cynical definition.

But…

Technically, the fact that they aren’t signed to a major publisher defines them as independent, but like the other heavy-hitters such as Roberts Space Industries, having so much cash int he bank certainly blurs the lines. Besides, good on them for finding the money (and VCs are a battle) and for finding such a beautiful visual style.
