If there’s one genre that defined the 16 bit gaming era, you could easily make a good case for the good ol’ competitive fighting game. Street Fighter II, Fatal Fury, and a whole other host of Capcom and SNK games caused sore thumbs for Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive or arcade fans alike. PC gamers even had Rise of the Robots to show off the 3D rendering power of their platform.
But do you remember Clayfighter? Released on consoles way back in 93/94, the game featured ‘claymation’ style characters duking it out . That’s the spirit embodied by FrightShow Fighter, a classic competitive brawler currently doing its thing on Kickstarter.
Coraline gets punchy
My first thought after seeing the Kickstarter video was a cross between animated claymation movie Coraline and something like Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. But with more violence. With a bit of polish, this could be a fun beat ’em up, and I love the idea of using gestures to do special moves. It brings the concept right into the touchscreen era in a way that makes sense. Hopefully, with enough interest there will be an Android version!
You can show your support for the project by either pledging on Kickstarter, or giving them your vote on Steam Greenlight. You might remember that Skullgirls found success on both Kickstarter and Greenlight, giving PC fans a fighting game to be proud of. Whatever happens, this is definitely one to watch!
What do you think of the art style and gameplay ideas for FrightShow Fighter?
